In case you were wondering whatever happened to that puppy trapped in the storm drain for over a week, here is the latest. Stormy and his brother Sampson and sister Sadie were raffled off today at Dallas Animal Services. Before noon, there was a lineup of folks just waiting to get in and register for the drawing, along with the media.
While people waited for the drawing, they checked out the hundreds of dogs, puppies, cats and kittens that are available for adoption.
DAS Manager Jody Jones and her staff were so accommodating and friendly, they made Six Flags Over Texas look like a Marine Corps boot camp.
At 12:20 DAS vet Dr. Cate McManus brought the box with the raffle entries to the lobby for the moment. You could literally hear people holding their breath hoping that their names might be pulled. Stormy was up first and the three fellows who rescued him from the storm drain were there and pulled Donna and Mike Carruthers’ names for Stormy. Then Sadie went to Evelyn and Danny Guerra and Sampson to Deanna and Keith Oatman and their son Robert.
The new owners were then whisked to the conference room to see if it was a love connection. Of course, it was, so appropriate paperwork was filled out and photos taken. The pups will be liberated from sexual anxieties Monday (aka spayed and neutered) and sent to their homes.
Mike admitted that they hadn’t had a dog for a couple of years and when they saw the news coverage, they thought they would try. As Mike said, “We prayed this morning that if it was meant to be, it would happen.”
When asked whether Stormy would be retaining his name, Donna didn’t hesitate: “Yes!”
Stormy’s new home will be three fenced-in acres with no storm drains, and he’ll be the only pooch on property.
BTW, the puppies’ parents are still at DAS adjusting to life off the road. Mom is a 70-lb. white lab mix and Dad is a 35-lb. scruffy fellow. FYI: when the responders were trying to rescue Stormy, Mom stayed nearby barking at the rescuers, and Dad wasn’t too far off. These two took care of the pups and now need someone to take care of them.
DAS staffers want to get them acclimated to these changes before putting them up for adoption.
