When Kaufman County District Attorney Mike McLelland and his wife Cynthia were brutally murdered in their home on March 30, it made national headlines. In addition to their family, friends and associates, they left behind “two much-loved family dogs” — Destiny and Sugar.

Since that tragedy, the dogs, which are between three and four years old, have been accepted by Richardson-based Take Me Home Pet Rescue in the hopes of finding one home for both of them.

According to TMHPR Executive Director Elise Bissell, “It’s obvious that they were very loved, and that these two really need each other. They’re happy, beautiful dogs, who have been through some pretty trying times, but like all dogs they live in the moment and just want to be loved, have a home of their own and be part of a family again.

“These dogs don’t know what happened, they just know that they’re not with their previous family anymore, and that’s got to be sad and confusing for them,” Bissell said. “But they’re resilient and so loving. There’s been too much trauma, too many tragedies in the news lately, and having Destiny and Sugar with us has really lifted our spirits and reminded us that life goes on, and that love and friendship are great healers.”

Elise added that the twosome “would do best in a home with older children and no other dogs and no cats.”

If you’re interested in Destiny and Sugar, contact TMHPR. If you’re already happily living with your pet, take the time to make plans for them if by chance they outlive you.

Yes, that’s not a smooth or pleasant transition, but too often family pets end up in the pound or euthanized when their owners do not make “after-life” plans.

Of course, if you plan to live forever, never mind.
